Oil Sump

Oil sumps are fabricated reservoirs, typically located under the engine crankshaft, designed to contain lubricating oil. They feature an oil pump pickup and are often integrated with cooling fins or baffles to manage oil temperature and prevent cavitation. Constructed from stamped steel or cast aluminum, sumps must withstand significant impact and vibration. Internal baffling directs oil flow to critical areas during vehicle movement, maintaining consistent lubrication. Oil sumps incorporate drain plugs for servicing and gasket mating surfaces for leak-proof sealing against the engine block.
