This part basically takes the rotating motion of your wiper motor and turns it into the back – and – forth swinging motion of your wiper blades. It’s a system of rods and pivots, a mechanical connection really, that gets the power from the motor out to the windshield. It allows the blades to move across the glass smoothly and consistently, and also lets them reverse direction. Think of it as the arms and legs of your windshield wipers. The wiper motor is the muscle, but this linkage is what makes them wipe. It connects directly to the motor, and then to the wiper blades themselves. It’s housed underneath the cowl panel – that plastic piece at the base of your windshield. It needs to work in sync with the motor to give you a clean sweep. A failing wiper linkage can cause all sorts of issues. You might notice uneven wiping – one blade moves slower or not at all. Or the blades might move jerky or hesitate.
