Clutch Release Bearing

Clutch release bearings, also known as throw-out bearings, facilitate clutch disengagement by applying force to the clutch pressure plate fingers. Located between the transmission input shaft and the pressure plate, these bearings push against the pressure plate to overcome spring pressure, allowing gear changes. Construction typically features a sealed, lubricated roller or ball bearing assembly within a steel housing. Modern designs often incorporate a stamped steel cage or polymer guides for reduced friction and noise. Proper function is critical for smooth clutch operation and preventing transmission damage; failure presents as noise during clutch pedal operation or difficulty shifting.
