This sensor basically monitors the wear on your brake pads. It doesn’t measure how much pad is left directly, but it detects the position of a little wear indicator that’s built into the pad itself. When your pads get thin enough, that indicator comes into contact with the sensor and completes a circuit, triggering a warning light on your dashboard. Sometimes it's just a light, and other times the car’s computer might display a specific message. It's a critical part of your braking system, obviously.
