This fan is really the heart of your heating and cooling system inside the car. Its job is to push air across the heater core in the winter to give you heat, and across the evaporator core in the summer to give you air conditioning. It doesn't make the hot or cold air, it just moves it from where it’s created to the vents in your dash and floors. It has a little motor attached to spin the blades, and usually a resistor pack to control how fast it blows – that’s how you get different fan speeds. Think of it as the pump in your HVAC system. Your engine creates the heat or the A/C system generates the cool air, but this fan is what actually delivers it to you inside the cabin. Without it, you’re stuck with just outside air, no matter what temperature setting you choose. It's tucked away inside the HVAC box, usually under the dash, so you don't see it working directly.
