This part basically keeps the right amount of tension on your timing belt. It's got a spring – loaded arm, sometimes hydraulic, that pushes against the belt. This ensures it doesn’t flap around or get too loose, but also doesn’t get stretched too tight. It’s constantly adjusting, keeping everything dialed in. Some tensioners also have a little pulley wheel built in to help guide the belt.
It’s a critical piece within the timing system. The timing system, as you probably know, makes sure all the engine’s moving parts – the pistons, crankshaft, camshaft – are all working together in time. If the timing is off, even by a little bit, the engine won't run right, or possibly not at all. The tensioner keeps the belt running smoothly around all those gears and pulleys, so everything stays synchronized. It’s usually located somewhere on the front of the engine, near the timing belt itself.
Well, if this thing fails, the timing belt can slip or break. A broken timing belt is a big deal. In a lot of engines – interference engines – if the belt breaks, the pistons and valves will collide inside the engine, causing really serious damage. Think bent valves, damaged pistons, and a hefty repair bill. Even if you don’t have an interference engine, a slipping belt will cause poor performance, rough running, and eventually, engine failure. You'll notice if it's starting to go – things like a ticking noise from the engine, a loss of power, or the engine just not starting. It’s generally a good idea to replace this when you do the timing belt itself – they’re often accessed at the same time. You can find a quality timing belt tensioner, along with everything else you need, over at Fixparts Online, but lots of places carry them. Just make sure you get one that's right for your vehicle. It really acts like a shield for your engine’s internal components.
