This seal basically keeps oil in and keeps dirt and debris out. It sits right where the crankshaft comes out of the engine block. The crankshaft is what’s turning everything, and it’s bathed in oil for lubrication. This seal’s job is to contain that oil so it doesn’t leak all over the place, and it prevents things from the outside – dust, water, road grime – from getting inside the engine where they don’t belong. It’s a pretty simple part, but critical. Think of it as a barrier protecting the heart of your engine. It’s positioned between the rotating crankshaft and the stationary engine block. As the crankshaft spins, the seal has to move with it, maintaining that tight barrier. It’s part of the engine’s sealing system, alongside things like your valve cover gaskets and oil pan gasket, but this one has a particularly tough job because of that constant rotation.
