This little guy really just does one thing, but it does it well. It maintains the right amount of tension on your serpentine belt – that’s the main belt that runs all sorts of things like your alternator, power steering pump, and AC compressor. It’s got a spring – loaded arm that automatically takes up any slack as the belt wears or stretches. Basically, it keeps everything running smoothly and at the right speed. Think of it as a helper for your serpentine belt. That belt wraps around all those different components, and the tension pulley ensures it’s tight enough to grip everything properly without being too tight and causing damage. It’s usually located somewhere along the front of the engine, close to the belt itself. You’ll usually see it with a bolt in the center that allows the pulley to swing and adjust. If this pulley goes bad, you’ll notice it. A failing tension pulley can cause the serpentine belt to slip, which leads to all sorts of problems. You might hear a squealing or chirping noise, especially when you first start the car or when you put a load on the engine like turning on the AC. More seriously, a slipping belt can cause your battery to not charge correctly, your power steering to become difficult, and even your AC to stop working.
