It maintains the right amount of tension on your serpentine belt – that’s the main belt that runs all sorts of things like your alternator, power steering pump, and AC compressor. It’s got a spring – loaded arm that automatically takes up any slack as the belt wears or stretches. Basically, it keeps everything running smoothly and at the right speed. Think of it as a helper for your serpentine belt. That belt wraps around all those different components, and the tension pulley ensures it’s tight enough to grip everything properly without being too tight and causing damage.
