This sensor basically measures the temperature of the exhaust gases coming out of your engine. It sends that temperature reading to the engine’s computer, the ECU. It's a pretty straightforward job, really – it just tells the computer how hot things are getting after combustion. The ECU uses that temperature info for a few things. Primarily, it helps control the catalytic converter. It needs to know how hot the exhaust is to make sure the catalytic converter is working efficiently – like, is it getting hot enough to actually clean the exhaust, but not too hot that it gets damaged. It also helps with fuel trim, meaning how much fuel the engine injects. If the exhaust is hotter than expected, the computer might lean out the fuel mixture a little bit. It’s part of a bigger system to keep things running smoothly and cleanly. If this sensor fails, a few things can happen. Your check engine light will almost certainly come on. More importantly, the ECU won’t have accurate information, so the catalytic converter could get damaged from overheating, or it might not clean the exhaust properly, which affects emissions and could lead to a failed emissions test.
