This thing takes the relatively low voltage from your car’s battery and boosts it up to the tens of thousands of volts needed to create a spark in your engine. That spark is what ignites the air – fuel mixture, basically starting the whole combustion process that makes your car run. It's an electromagnetic amplifier, if you want to get technical, but think of it as a power – upper for the spark. Each cylinder usually has its own coil, though some newer cars are using coil packs that handle multiple cylinders. It's a critical part of the ignition system, obviously. The engine control unit—the car’s computer—tells the coil when to fire. It’s all timed perfectly to match when each piston is ready to fire. Without a good, strong spark from the coil, that cylinder doesn’t fire, leading to a misfire. It’s a pretty direct link to getting power to the wheels. A failing ignition coil will cause all sorts of trouble. You’ll notice if it’s bad because you’ll likely get a rough idle, a loss of power, and the check engine light will definitely come on.
