This little guy basically reads where the crankshaft is in its rotation. It’s a magnetic sensor, so it picks up on teeth or notches on the crankshaft or flywheel. It sends that information – the position and speed – as an electrical signal back to the engine control unit, or ECU. It tells the computer exactly which cylinder is ready to fire, and when. It's not just about position, it's about timing everything perfectly. Think of it as a key piece in starting and running your engine. When you turn the key, the ECU uses the signal from this sensor to figure out when to fire the spark plugs and inject fuel. While the engine is running, it constantly monitors the crankshaft position, sending updates multiple times per second.
