These little guys basically monitor how fast each of your wheels is turning. They do this by using a toothed ring – sometimes called an exciter ring – and the sensor reads the pulses as the wheel rotates. It sends that information as an electrical signal back to your car’s computer. Some vehicles even have multiple sensors per wheel for added redundancy.
This signal is super important because it feeds into a bunch of different systems. Primarily, it’s what allows your anti – lock braking system (ABS) to work correctly. The computer needs to know if a wheel is locking up during braking to release pressure and keep you from skidding. It also plays a big part in your traction control and stability control systems, helping to prevent loss of control. Beyond that, it’s essential for things like your speedometer to accurately show your speed and even your transmission shifting smoothly. Think of it as a key piece of information your car relies on to keep everything running as it should.
If one of these sensors fails, you’ll likely notice a few things. Often, the ABS light will come on on your dashboard, telling you there's an issue with the braking system. You might also notice your speedometer acting strangely or your transmission shifting awkwardly. Sometimes, it’s subtle, but if it’s seriously messed up, you’ll probably feel a difference in how your car brakes. It really acts like a shield for your safety systems. A bad sensor can cause those safety features to not work correctly, so getting it fixed promptly is always a good idea. You can find these fairly easily; we sometimes have them in stock here, or you can check places like Fixparts Online to see if they have what you need.
