This sensor basically measures the amount of air entering your engine. It doesn't just measure volume, though, it figures out the mass of the air. It does this using a tiny, heated wire – that’s the “hot – film” part. The more air flowing past it, the more the wire cools down. The sensor reads how much current it needs to keep that wire at a consistent temperature and translates that into how much air is actually coming in. It sends that information to the engine’s computer. The engine computer needs a really precise reading of airflow to figure out how much fuel to inject.
