A PTO basically takes power from the engine and transfers it to auxiliary equipment. Think of things like a dump truck’s hydraulic pump, a snowplow, a street sweeper, or even a large generator. It’s not powering the wheels directly, it’s powering something else that needs engine power to work. It does this using a rotating shaft that connects to that other equipment. There are different types – some are all mechanical, some are hydraulic – but they all do the same basic job: deliver engine power elsewhere. A PTO is mounted directly to the transmission. It essentially “taps” into the engine’s power flow before it gets to the driveshaft. So, the engine spins the transmission, the transmission spins the PTO, and the PTO spins whatever hydraulic pump or other device it’s connected to. It’s usually controlled from inside the cab, so the driver can engage or disengage the power flow as needed.
