Basically, this little guy takes the pressure from your master cylinder – when you push the clutch pedal – and turns it into mechanical movement. It pushes on the fork that disengages the clutch, letting you shift gears. It’s filled with hydraulic fluid, and a piston inside it moves when that pressure comes in. It’s a pretty simple design, really. It’s a key part of your clutch system, working hand – in – hand with the master cylinder. Think of the master cylinder as the one telling the clutch to disengage, and the slave cylinder as the one doing the work. Without the slave cylinder pushing on that clutch fork, the clutch won't disengage, and you won’t be able to shift. It’s located near the transmission, usually. Well, if this thing goes bad, you’ll notice it. You might have trouble getting into gear, or it might be really hard to get it out of gear. Sometimes it will feel soft and spongy, other times it'll be really firm and hard to push the pedal.
