This rubber boot, essentially a cover, protects the constant velocity joint – the CV joint. That joint lets your wheels turn and go up and down with the suspension while still getting power. The boot keeps dirt, water, and debris out, and more importantly, keeps the grease in. That grease is what keeps everything moving smoothly inside the joint. Think of it as part of the system that gets power from the transmission to the wheels. The CV joint is right there at the end of the axle, letting the wheel move freely while still being driven. The boot sits over the joint, allowing that movement without letting contaminants wreck the internal parts. You’ll find them on both ends of the front axles on front – wheel drive cars, and on the rear axles of some all – wheel drive vehicles too. If this boot tears, things go downhill fast.
