This rubber boot, essentially a cover, protects the constant velocity joint – the CV joint. That joint lets your wheels turn and go up and down with the suspension while still getting power. The boot keeps dirt, water, and debris out, and more importantly, keeps the grease in. That grease is what keeps everything moving smoothly inside the joint. Think of it as part of the system that gets power from the transmission to the wheels. The CV joint is right there at the end of the axle, letting the wheel move freely while still being driven. The boot sits over the joint, allowing that movement without letting contaminants wreck the internal parts. You’ll find them on both ends of the front axles on front – wheel drive cars, and on the rear axles of some all – wheel drive vehicles too. If this boot tears, things go downhill fast. Once dirt and water get in, they’ll quickly wear out the CV joint itself. It starts with clicking noises, especially when you turn, and then eventually can lead to complete failure of that joint, meaning you could lose drive. Replacing just the boot is usually much cheaper than replacing the whole axle assembly, and that’s why it’s important to address a torn boot right away.
