These little guys basically measure the thickness of your brake pads. They don't actually feel the thickness, though. What they do is monitor the position of a part connected to your brake pads – usually a little metal tab. As your pads wear down, that tab moves, and the sensor detects that movement. It then sends a signal to your dashboard, usually a warning light, letting you know it’s time to think about new pads. Some systems are a bit more sophisticated and can even tell you approximately how much life is left. Think of it as an early warning system for your brakes. It’s part of your overall braking system, of course, but it doesn't apply the brakes. It simply tells you when the friction material on your pads is getting dangerously low. They're usually fitted to the front wheels, sometimes the rear, depending on the vehicle. They work alongside your ABS and other safety systems. They're really important for safety and avoiding more expensive repairs. If you ignore the warning light, you risk wearing your pads down to the metal backing plate. That will damage your rotors – those are the discs the pads squeeze against – and you'll end up having to replace those too. Replacing rotors is a lot more costly than just replacing the pads.
