This little guy’s job is pretty straightforward. It basically monitors how fast each of your wheels is spinning. It does this by using a toothed ring – sometimes called an encoder ring – and the sensor reads the teeth as the wheel turns. It sends that information – the speed – as an electrical signal back to your car’s computer. Each wheel has its own sensor, so the computer knows exactly how fast each one is moving. The wheel speed sensors are really important for a few different systems. The big one is your anti – lock braking system, ABS. The computer uses the speed data from these sensors to figure out if a wheel is about to lock up during braking, and it can then briefly release the brakes on that wheel to help you maintain steering control. They also feed information to your traction control and stability control systems. Think of it as the system’s eyes – it needs to know what each wheel is doing to work correctly. It even plays a part in your speedometer reading, though that’s usually a combined input from a few different sensors.
